18:00 - 21:00

Knoll Galerie Wien
Gumpendorfer Straße 18, 1060 Wien
The exhibition takes place in the context of curated by_vienna: “image/reads/text”. In 2017, 21 Vienna galleries are involved in the project. In cooperation with international curators, the galleries conceptualise exhibitions opening up various perspectives on the topic. curated by_vienna is funded and organised by the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure with the objective of emphasising Vienna’s significance as a gallery location.

This year, the curated by_vienna gallery festival is examining the relationship between art and language. The exhibitions, developed by 21 Vienna galleries and international curators, will address the topic of language in the context of contemporary art, which is particularly relevant in view of widespread digitalisation and the associated trends towards visualisation.

In 2017 «curated by _vienna» is also asking the fundamental question of how visual arts today can be translated into linguistic discourses and theories, and what the works themselves already contain that can influence the subsequent verbalisation. The gallerists, curators and art mediators, as players involved in the curated by _vienna festival are also mouthpieces for art – aiming to feed it into intellectual and economic relationships for exploitation. One of art’s characteristics, however, is that it follows its own rules, its own reality, irrespective of linguistic translatability. With this in mind, what must, in the end, remain unsaid?

«While Mr. Schulze is reading, the Balkan train crosses the bridge at Nisch, a pig whines in the cellar of the butcher Nuttke.“

On April 12, 1918 Richard Huelsenbeck presented his „Dadaist Manifesto“ in Berlin.
In it he defines the „simultaneous poem“ with the sentence which gives the exhibition its title. Like a simultanous poem „While Mr. Schulze is reading...“ arises with the „Romanum Belvedere“ of the Roman Museum of Antiquity, „Inverso Mundus“ by the Russian artist group AES + F and the abstract forms of the Mexican artist Carlos Amorales to a place of construction of knowledge through narrative.
